Tell me something tuesday #6

 

Tell me something Tuesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Cambria Hebert, in which she asks us something, and we post our answer. And the question of the week is:

If you could spend a day with a book character, who would it be and what would you do?

That's actually a very interesting question. I could spend a day with a lot of characters, but from all of them, I think I would have to choose Merit, from the Chicagoland Vampires series, by Chloe Neill. Merit is funny, smart, and snarky. Her point of view is always refreshing and I honestly couldn't choose another person but Mer. 

She was attacked by a vampire on her university and saved by Ethan Sullivan, who turned her into one of their own. Mer is appointed as Sentinel of Cadogan House, and since book one, she's been struggling with her duties and her own emotions. She's grown so much since then, especially in Hard Bitten and Drink Deep. It's rare to see such a deep character development, both in the main character, and in the love interest, and Chloe Neil managed to write about both. 

The tricky question here is the second one. What would I do with a vampire warrior who loves to eat?

I'd probably take Merit to the best restaurant in town, and after that, she could take me on a tour in Cadogan House (hopefully the Master, Ethan Sullivan, would be inside. Wouldn't it be great if I got the chance to talk to him?). I'm hoping she'd show me how to throw a few punches and sword-fighting moves, and we'd spare a little. Too much of a dream, but a girl has to try. 

So that's my answer. If I had the chance to choose another character, that would be Jace, from The Mortal Instruments. Who wouldn't want to spend a day with him? Seriously.

Tell me something Tuesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Cambria Hebert, in which she asks us something, and we post our answer. And the question of the week is:

Who are your book boyfriends?

Ok, a very simple question, and a very big answer. I could name 30 book boyfriends here because romance is what I read most. And there's always that hot guy in the story that makes you fall in love with him. But I managed to choose 5 of them, and a quote for each boy. So, here you go:

1. Will (Angelfire, by Courtney Allison Moulton)

Will is probably the most caring, sweet, gorgeous, and badass boy I've ever read about. I love his devotion to Ellie, the way he'd die to help her, how he'd rather be tortured than raise a hand against her. As you know, I'm a big fan of Will and Ellie, and of course he has to be on my list. Here's one of my favorite scenes:

I wiped at my face, choking on the taste of salt in my tears. “It still … it’s not fair. What if next time I’m with a boy I like?”
“I won’t be able to bear it.”
“What will it be, Will?” I asked, my voice rising as I fought my tears. “Are you going to storm in and claim me then, too?”

2. Ash (The Iron Fey series, by Julie Kagawa)

Yes, I'm Team Ash, and of course he's one of my book boyfriends. A dangerous, icy winter prince who can kill fiercely with his sword? And whose loyalty is so strong he'd do anything to protect who he loves? That is just the kind of character I fall in love with.

3. Crispin Russel a.k.a. Bones (Night Huntress series, by Jeaniene Frost)

Bones, Bones... shameless, badass, caring, sarcastic, and with a British accent. I really couldn't have asked for more. When I start talking about Bones to my friends, they think I'm crazy. After all, shouldn't I be repulsed by someone like him? Well... not really. His confident exterior was what drew me to him in the first place, and as the romance blossomed, his love and devotion to Cat made me fall head over heels in love with him. Also, Jeaniene Frost knows how to develop a character's personality. Both him and Cat changed so much in this series, and I love that. They really grew to trust each other, no matter the consequences. 

“All right, ready. Bones is a vampire, [...] but who’s more powerful?”
“She is,” Bones replied at once.

“Are you okay with that?” I blurted, forgetting for a moment that we had an audience. [...]

Then Bones’s expression became serious, and he leaned forward to brush my hand.
“I’ve watched you barely escape death several times, and each instance killed me a little inside. They may be dormant now, but we have enemies both cunning and cruel. Knowing you possess the power to defeat most of them doesn’t threaten me, luv. It relieves me to my very core.” - One Grave at a Time, Chapter 6.

4. Alex (Angel, by L.A. Weatherly)

Alex would be an exception to the rule. Sure, he's badass, gorgeous, etc etc etc... but his sweetness is what's most appealing about him, in my opinion. His relationship with Willow, unlike most couples in YA books, started because they had to deal with a harsh situation, and the only way was to work together. But just because they were working together "against their will" didn't mean they had to be rude to each other. Alex and Willow behaved nicely, like they were friends, and only after a couple of chapters did the author give us hints about their feelings... which, if you think about it, is awesome. How many times do you see a boy and a girl actually being nice to each other, and then falling in love? I

Emotion tightened Alex’s chest. Taking her head in his hands he kissed her deeply, his lips lingering on hers. “Willow, all I care about is that you’re you, and – and that you’re with me. That’s all that matters.”
“Really?” she whispered, her eyes bright with tears.
He laughed suddenly, smoothing her blonde hair from her face. “Hey, I’m the lucky one, don’t you know that? You are so – absolutely incredible. Everything about you.”
Willow swallowed. “I’m pretty lucky too, actually.” - Angel, Chapter 14.

5. Owen (Elemental Assassin series, by Jennifer Estep)

I love Owen for many reasons, actually, but the most important one is because he accepts Gin for who she is. He loves her when she's dressed like a princess, and he loves her the same way when she's covered with blood, after killing someone. After Gin's harsh romantic experiences, I was relieved when Owen came in the picture. It's great how noble and caring he is, but when someone's about to hurt Gin or his sister, he kills the guy with everything he's got. And he's got a lot of fighting skills, let me assure you. 

I know what you do, what kind of violence you’re capable of. But also, I know what kind of woman you are.”
His words startled me more than anything had in a long time. “And what kind of woman would that be?”
Owen stared at me. “Someone who’s passionate and full of life. Someone who’s funny and smart. But
mostly, someone who’ll do whatever the fuck it takes to protect the people she cares about. That’s what I like about you, Gin. That’s what I admire about you. That’s what draws me to you.” - Venom, Chapter 31.

*Sigh*... So there you go. My book boyfriends <3 I wanted to mention Dimitri Belikov and Ethan Sullivan,  but I don't want this post to be so huge. With the quotes and all, it's already bigger than I had imagined.

Tell me something Tuesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Cambria Hebert, in which she asks us something, and we post our answer. And the question of the week is:

 Who is your favorite heroine in a book? (Okay you can name more than one)

A very interesting question, one I love to answer everytime I'm asked that. It's very simple, and yet, complicated as hell. I have so many favorite heroines that I can't possibly name them all. So, let's get started. 

Rose Hathaway, from Vampire Academy (by Richelle Mead)

I bet a lot of people thought about her as soon as they read the question. Rose is the kind of girl who's strong, sarcastic, sweet and loyal. She protects who she loves with everything she's got, but when things go downhill... well, let's just say she also does whatever is necessary.
I respected her from the moment she ran away from the Academy with Lissa. What really made me love her, however, was the situation she had to go through in Blood Promise and Spirit Bound. Only a true heroine can survive something like that without completely breaking.









Cat Crawfield, from Night Huntress (by Jeaniene Frost)

Another heroine I'm quite fond of is Cat. I recently mentioned that I'd like to travel to this book's world, just to know Cat and be her friend. Imagine someone badass and capable of doing a lot of damage, but still human enough to apreciate life (even though she's half dead o.O). That's Cat. I love how tough she was with Bones when they first met, how she never gives up. Her willingness to put herself in the path of danger to save someone innocent is remarkable. The series is already on book six, and Cat still manages to surprise me a lot of times, which is amazing.









Gin Blanco, from Elemental Assassin (by Jennifer Estep)

An assassin who kills mercilessly and protects fiercely. That's Gin Blanco. She's someone I admire immensely with every challenge that's thrown at her way. Estep is the kind of writer who is not afraid to hurt her characters, if it will make them stronger. And oh, Gin is so strong. She has to go through some serious situations. Being burned to the bones, bitten, tortured, electrocuted... those are just samples. And each time, she rises again and kicks ass. That's why I love her. Besides that, Gin is so human. She loves her family, and would do anything to help them. It's heart-warming.









So, these are my favorite heroines. Aside from those, there's also Merit, from the Chicagoland Vampire series, which I absolutely love. I don't want this answer to be so huge, so I just talked about those three ;D

Tell me something Tuesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Cambria Hebert, in which she asks us something, and we post our answer. And the question of the week is:

Do you usually like the book better than the movie or the movie better than the book? What is your favorite book to movie adaptation you have ever seen?

I won't deny it: movies do not appeal to me as much as books do. In the movies, we're watching the characters struggle through something, emotions flickering across the actors' faces, but yet, we don't get to know them. In the books, the narration makes it possible for us to experience their emotions, see what they're thinking, their hopes, their guesses. It feels much more real than a movie ever could. However, I love watching a movie adaptation of a book I've read (if it's well done). 

Taking Percy Jackson, for example. I watched the movie first, and I loved it so much I had to buy and read the whole series. And now I can't watch Percy Jackson without hating it, because they altered so many things from the book that it doesn't look the same story. It's like the background is the same, the characters' name are the same, but the plot is different, the essence of the movie is different, the villain is different (where the hell is Chronos in the movie? Baking some cookies in the Underworld? He's not even mentioned)... They totally ruined the book D: 

 

On the other hand, I absolutely detest The Vampire Diaries books, and I love the series. L.J Smith wanted to create so many twists that it was bizarre. Elena's like a shapeshifter, seriously. She's a happy cheerleader, then she's an emo vampire, then she's a moody ghost, a human with angelic powers and a pure soul, then she's ol' Elena again... I mean, it's ridiculous! Not that I love Elena Dobrev in the series, but she's fine. She manages to look both vulnerable and strong most times, and I like that in her acting. 

 

My favorite book to movie adaptation? I have to say The Lord of the Rings. After reading the book - it was quite recently, actually - I watched the move all over again. It's fantastic! The lines are identical, Tolkien's writing is full of details that made me picture the scene in the movie just like it was portrayed. Tolkien's a genius. If the second and third movies are as faithful to his original work as the first one, I ought to like the books. No, I ought to love it. I'm particularly excited to see more of Legolas. He's my favorite character, but not much is said about him in the movies. 

So, to sum it all up pretty fast, I think it depends on the book/movie, how good the author's writing and plot is, and if in the movie, it's better to fall in line or make up your own story. Overall, though, I prefer books. Like I said in the beginning, there's nothing better than knowing a character with your heart. What about you? Do you like the movie, or the book better?

Tell me something tuesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Cambria Hebert, in which she asks us something, and we post our answer. I found this meme to be pretty simple and interesting, so here I am ;D

And the question is: How do you feel about love triangles?

Now, that's a tricky one. I have mixed feelings about love triangles. It depends on the book. For example, I adore Vampire Academy's love triangle, because Richelle Mead developed it very well. It was believable, and even though Rose irritated me sometimes with her indecision, it was still a good romance. 

The same cannot be said about Twilight. I couldn't care less about Edward and Jacob, simply because Bella doesn't deserve either of them. She's annoying, doesn't have facial expression, and her personality is as flat as a door. I'm glad Jacob fell in love with Renesmee, and that Bella could live happily ever after with her sparkling vamp. So, to sum it all up, I didn't like Twilight's love triangle, but the ending was nice enough.  

I feel particularly bad for the guy who's not chosen by the girl in the end. I always like the one who's chosen, but I feel glad everytime the author manages to give the poor bloke a happy ending. Or, you know, do something pretty drastic, but that still feels real. (Hallo, Andrea Cremer). 

But really, it would be nice if, for a change, the love triangle was about two girls and a guy (like Percy Jackson). I loved to see this side of Percy, and it'd be good if there was a book like this one. Too bad  there's a big amount of love triangles with the same drama, the same indecision, the same story... 

Something that bothers me a lot is the love triangle in which the girl has made her mind since the begginning, like The Vampire Diaries (the series). Elena's true love is Stefan, and she never feels insecure about the other Salvatore. It is always Stefan, Stefan, Stefan. This isn't a love triangle, it's a girl who's loved by two boys. I really hope Elena will give Damon a chance, but so far, nothing. A love triangle with so much potential being wasted by insta-love... 

So, overall, I like love triangles, but only if the girl is interesting and sincerely insecure, the guys are not two morons fighting each other like barbarians and acting like the girl is a damsel, and if the ending is realistic. ;D
